Food Franchises in Ontario

  • September 27, 2022
  • Andrew Hoffman

Today we’re going to talk about franchises in the $33B food and beverage industry.

As you might imagine, many people are excited about franchise restaurant opportunities with full service, QSRs, fast-casual. As you know, they appear to be a lot of fun, as they should, if you’re a customer in a well-run business.

Success in the food sector can be a tough gig. The best franchisors provide outstanding initial training followed up with robust on-going support. In addition, you will also be able to tap into a network of other franchisees for operational support.

As a franchisee, you need to visualize the five fundamental decision making criteria: Skill, Experience, Passion, Desired Lifestyle, and your Finances. Above all, your skills and experience are critically important pre-determiners of your future success.

In many sectors, you can get by without in-depth, relevant experience by leaning on superior systems. To be successful in the food sector, requires some degree of related experience in the food sector.

Above all, find a good franchisor with strong systems, an in-depth operations manual, business management support software, and vibrant marketing portals and comprehensive training.

With tools made available to you, you can manage and monitor your staff through training on safety, cleaning, hygiene, greeting customers, FOH scripts, BOH maintenance and FOH policies as well.

If the franchisor lacks a thorough operations manual and a business management program, it may not be worth an in-depth look. On the other hand, that will depend upon your personal experience. As a result, it may be a terrific business or a real challenge, but possibly just not the one for you.

One of my favorite food franchises is The Iron Skillet. Take a moment to check out https://myironskillet.ca/ They have terrific locations in both Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. The Iron Skillet is an emerging brand built on great systems and with fantastic owners.

The menu was designed by award winning Red Seal Chef Tony Sensenberger. Tony and his wife Doris are the founders and operators of The Iron Skillet. Doris runs the FOH while Tony runs the BOH. Most importantly, you will enjoy fantastic food, a flexible format and a full serve restaurant with take-out and delivery.

Flexible formatting addresses the size and shape of your location, where you are and your appetite for the size of the restaurant.

In conclusion, look for an easy to manage format with great operating and training systems.
